A Coach by Mom’s Side

Experienced doulas provide assistance and comfort to moms before and after baby’s arrival

Family Village offers birth doulas to home-visiting participants to provide added support for families residing in Delaware County.

A doula is someone who provides physical and emotional comfort as well as informational support around the birth of a child. A doula can visit you several times before your baby is born to help you prepare for birth, and can also come with you to the hospital and stay with you while you give birth. Your doula will also visit several times after the baby is born to see how you’re doing, help you with sleep and feeding your baby, and make sure that you are adjusting to life with a new little one!

Birth doulas help promote a safe environment for parents by working with medical professionals and caregivers at the hospital, to ensure the birthing parent is supported, engaged and listened to.

You can also ask us about training to become a doula and joining the Delco Doula Collaborative. In Pennsylvania, doulas can be reimbursed by Medicaid, once the doula has completed certain steps to be accredited and to have a contract with a Medicaid company. Doulas in our network have access to trainings, promotion through the registry, and connections with other organizations and healthcare providers. If you would like to learn more about becoming a doula, please contact delcodoulas@delcofamilyvillage.org. If you are interested in having support from a doula during pregnancy and afterwards, please apply for support.
